LDR vs. MilSO

In case you don't know, LDR stands for long distance relationship, and MilSO stands for Military Significant Other.
Now, I wanted to do this post because I feel like some people don't understand the difference between the two. A LDR is tough. Not being able to see the person you're dating/engaged/married to for long periods of time put a huge strain on relationships and everything takes longer, but at the same time they can mean more. You have to be strong and patient when you're in a ldr with someone. Now, a MilSO has to deal witht he stress of a LDR plus the stress of that person being in the military. The military is an interesting thing, although it seems very organized- it's not. Deployments and moves can happen last minute, or be postponed or moved up at the drop of a hat. Not knowing if your significant other will be able to call you or send letters or even if they are safe. Often we don't know exactly where our significant other is. The kind of relationship needed to make it through something like that s hard to explain. It takes so much hard work, trust and patience to make it through months of not knowing.

When you come across for someone who is a MilSO keep in mind how hard they have to work to keep their relationship strong and healthy and give them a break. When you find out about someone's LDR don't bring up their significant other and ask how much we miss them, because we miss them every single day and pretending to understand how hard that is, it's just plain annoying and in my opinion rude.

If you're a MilSO or in a LDR then comment and talk to me! It is so much easier to talk to others who have the same problems as you. The community of MilSO Sisters is so huge and I'm so grateful for them, I don't know where I'd be without all that support and understanding.

  2. Hey! I love this post. I'm engaged to a guy in the military and some of my college friends are in LDRs. They think it's the same, but it's not at all. They can at least plan their phone calls/Skype dates.
